The pandemic has brought a profound change in the global economy.
With countries reeling from the pandemic’s effects, solutions should be explored to kickstart the global economy. Not only that, extreme climate has also been an increasingly pressing issue. Speakers in this session will explore the use of green bonds and sustainable financing to facilitate the global economy, and how legal services may be efficiently utilized in support of green finance. The role of UNCITRAL instruments in addressing the issue of climate change will also be considered, including identifying areas where future work may be done.

Session 2.1: Emerging Technologies and the Digital Economy

With the pandemic, legal and business professionals have turned to digital technologies to facilitate their work. This session aims to firstly consider the emerging technologies that are conducive to the legal and business communities, what legal issues may arise from these emerging technologies (such as AI, automated contracting and data transactions), and the work of UNCITRAL and other international organisations around the world in this area to address these issues.

2:30pm – 3:45pm Session 2.2: The use of emerging technologies in dispute resolution

Because of the Digital Economy, the mode of dispute resolution will be forever transformed. Parties to the dispute may no longer be required to have to travel to the venue where the dispute has taken place, instead using technology to resolve cross border disputes. Speakers in this session will explore the initiatives of UNCITRAL and other national and international bodies, the progress of their work, and what the dispute resolution landscape will look like in the near future.

It is an unfortunate truth that as a result of the pandemic, the topics of insolvency and restructuring are as important as ever, both in the cross-border and the domestic context. Speakers in this session will explore the current work around the world in the cross-border context, with discussion turning to the work being done in the domestic context and regional initiatives, and finally, existing UNCITRAL texts and future upcoming work on the topic will be explored.
