“Big Earth Data in Facilitating of Sustainable Development Goals”
In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide the economic, social, and environmental aspects of development. However, several factors have constrained the implementation of the SDGs, including uneven development, lack of data, and the interconnection and mutual restriction between the goals. The Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences carried out research on improving SDG monitoring and evaluation of SDGs and made a series of achievement. To this end, the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) was established to strengthen national and international efforts through improved scientific support driven by innovative big data solutions for SDGs.

In September 2021, the Department of Justice and the International Youth Legal Exchange Federation co-organised the IYLEC 2021 themed “Access to Justice: The Key to Inclusive Society and Sustainable Development”. 11 delegations nominated by the legal and dispute resolution institutions in the Asia Pacific Region shared their views on cultural, socio-economic and legal traditions of their respective jurisdictions and how it may impact on the access to justice and provided recommendations.

This two-part session will first report on the IYLEC 2021, followed by an interactive roundtable dialogue session with the delegations and members of the adjudicating panel.

COVID-19 has accelerated the use of technology in the court rooms with virtual hearings conducted to ensure access to justice. Technology also enables cross transactional disputes to be settled via virtual means without the possible hefty costs of physical travels. What does legal technology entails for the future development of law and legal education? In this session, we will invite views from the judiciary on the use of technology in ensuring and advancing access to justice; use of technology in resolving disputes via ODR, and how legal education prepares law students for the future.
